Phones 4U and O2 lead the way in splitting handsets from airtime

The mobile phone has been sold in two basic ways for a long time. The consumer either paid for a Prepay handset and then ‘topped’ up their credit as and when they needed or they signed up to a contract that would give them a handset, usually at a subsidised price or even free, and this would require them to pay the line rental for a set minimum period, such as 12, 18 or 24 months.

The trouble with this second model is that many consumers now wish to change their handsets more regularly than 24 months – this leaves them with few options most of which are expensive. So it’s refreshing to see that Phones 4U and O2 have thought about this issue. Both companies have now split the handset agreement away from the airtime agreement. So now consumer effectively sign up to a hire purchase agreement for the handset and sign up to a lower monthly line rental.

This means that a consumer who has signed up to a 24 month airtime contract can change their handset after say 12 months and sign up to a new agreement for a new handset. They get given a credit for handing back a working handset that can be recycled and used by other users abroad etc. This of course means mobile phone insurance is important.

Hats off to the two companies for trying to offer alternatives to the old way of doing things lets watch this space as things develop.

Samsung Galaxy S4 insurance

Not long now until the Samsung Galaxy S4 finally launches in the UK. These sort of build ups have in the past only really happened when Apple have been launching a new iPhone or iPad. So after many false dawns maybe this new Samsung mobile phone could be the ‘new iPhone’ that makes Apple sit up and take note.

And it’s not just the build up, Carphone Warehouse have reported record pre-orders of the phone as have Phones 4U. The cost of the phone sim free is still being discussed online, Carphone were the first to announce how much they will be charging for the phone if bought without a contract – a whopping £629! But if you do some searching we think you will be able to buy it from about £530 (but don’t hold us to that).

Whatever the sim free price the good news for those of you looking to insure your brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 is that for a full cover policy at Insurance2go it will only cost £5.99 a month (down from £6.99) or £64.99 if you’d prefer to pay upfront for 12 months.

This will cover you for Accidental Damage, Liquid Damage, Cover for your immediate family, Theft, Unauthorised calls, Mobile Wallet Protection and Loss. The cover also starts the day you sign up (some make you wait 14 days!). So once you’ve got your new Samsung check out our Mobile Phone Insurance page and get yourself covered.

News update: 4G Taxis, iPhone 5 top of the pops and Samsung insurance all in place

The mobile operator EE is to set up a 3 month trial of enabling taxis in London and Birmingham with 4G connectivity. The trial will be operated in 40 taxis across the capital and 10 in the country’s second city. Research has shown that 1 in 5 taxi users would find their journey less stressful if they had fast internet connections during their journey. Sounds like an interesting trial but we think the 1 in 5 should take a chill pill!

A report from u-Switch has shown that the iPhone 5 is the most searched for handset for people looking to upgrade their mobile within the UK for March 2013. Second place is the iPhone 4S. Good news then that insurance2go is the recommended choice for those wanting to take out iphone 5 insurance of www.moneysavingexpert.com
Sorry to brag but it is true.

In anticiaption of the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S4 all in place for those looking to take out insurance on their new handset when it launches later this month. All the ‘i’s have been dotted and all the ‘t’s crossed so we can start to cover the handsets from day one. Cover begins as soon as the button is pushed on ‘submit’ not two weeks later like some others we could mention.

3 grows by 1 million in a year

Three, the operator based in Maidenhead, Berkshire have broken through the 9 million customer barrier for the first time. This is a fair achievement by the company who came the market last long after the other networks. They effectively had to grab customer from other networks which they have done successfully. They have always been competitive on price but have had to counter the perception of having a poor network coverage.

Recently, Three announced that they would not be increasing their prices for 4G services to existing 3G customers, a move that has wrong footed the other networks who are all looking to increase consumer spend with the newer faster services.

Congratulations to Three who have worked very hard to compete in a tough world.

The campaign to fixed contract tariffs gains momentum

The campaign to force network operators to fix the cost of users tariffs is gaining momentum as over 40,000 people complain to Which about increases to their tariff mid term.

Some network operators have been writing to consumers letting them know that their tariff is rising despite this happening mid-term. Consumers are saying that this is unfair as they’re in a contract for a certain period of time and expect the costs of calls to be fixed for the duration of that contract. This does seem to be a fairly reasonable position, if the consumer we to try and change the contract it would presumably be challenged by the operators.

Tesco Mobile have already said that they will never increase call costs mid-term. Watch this space, with this kind of momentum it might well be that the operators could look to back down.
